I participated to a Dialogue Table hosted at Hull House* with Latino Union around the issues of undocumented domestic workers. It was hosted due to the LOVE & LABOR exhib dedicated to domestic care where artifacts and stories of care-givers are exposed out as art pieces.

Other non-profits, domestic workers, activists and journalists participated and articulated the issues around informal care-givers.

WE ARE IMMIGRANTS

OUR JOB WAS NOT RECOGNIZED

NOT REGULATED

WE EARNED 1700 / MONTH

AND WORKED 24 HOURS/DAY

SO WE STARTED PROTESTING

BOYCOTTING

AND WE EARNED PROTECTION.

TO GAIN RIGHTS

YOU HAVE TO ASK FOR THEM

IN EVERY POSSIBLE WAY

BECAUSE THE POLITICIAN YOU ASK TO

HAS A WORKER LIKE YOU IN THE HOUSE

(and most likely wants to keep the payment low)

* Hull House was a secular settlement house dedicated to the immigrants & founded by Jane Addams and Ellen Starr. Now there it is a museum for the immigrants, the workers, the women.

PS: The tour of the Museum was given on the day by Moyra, a Filipino activist and domestic worker. Moyra is a co-founder of Chicago Coalition of Household Workers.
